I don't see as huge of a problem with the comparisons, is just giving an idea on what could be achieved plus further editing, this is never a complete start to end tutorial anyway, so that is more than enough. You want everything to be blurry at this point.

Makes it harder to see exactly what your suggested edits are doing. I looked at a lot of kayak whitewater pictures horizontal and could not locate it. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to drag a selection inside the photo which will become a smaller, cropped version of the image.
